People doing NMUs are expected to be around and paying attention to their NMU (even more than the package's regular maintainer), so getting a response from them should be trivially easy. Etc. The stuff's world readable, all you need to do is cp it to get it to happen sooner. Or you could email the NMUer and tell them not to wait. It's much better to spend the time _fixing_ the problem than worrying about trying to avoid it bothering anyone.
