It is much lighter. On my machine, xplanet takes tens of seconds
to generate an image. Also, xearth has the world map (while xplanet
has images of planets).

Believe me, since I tried to improve xplanet to have some of
xearth's features. Now xplanet can display date and time without
mojibake (http://www.debian.or.jp/~kubota/mojibake) even in
multibyte languages. Xplanet also now includes several transcriptions
(it is related to script or character, while translation is related to
language) of marker files (which contains names of cities) for Japanese
Katakana/Kanji, Korean Hangul, Cyrillic, Greek, simplified Chinese
Hanji, and traditional Chinese Hanji.
