Because you /may/ have some other things to do first. Checking for
updates frantically every hour and reacting within minutes (maximum time
that you can tolerate flasing things on your desktop) is something that
is IMHO only done by people constantly working on (or playing with)
their Linux workstation, instead of using it to work on other things.
It would be a shame if the applet would only be usable by that first
