With all the alternatives for such tools being mentioned, I should
mention the intuitively named /usr/bin/rename, which comes with perl and
is therefore already installed on almost every debian system.
And you can't get more powerful than rename, as you get to use all your
skills writing perl oneliners :-)
Think of rename when one of the other tools makes you wonder "If only
they'd have thought of..."
