The multibyte code in Slang is an iffy patch that hasn't been accepted
upstream. IIRC, for example, ACS characters need to be translated to
their Unicode equivalents when in UTF-8, but tihs patch doesn't do
this, so ACS characters don't work without a special case. I don't
recall if it has other bugs.
It also breaks binary and source compatibility, though the source API
is still close enough for almost all programs, AFAIK.
The other two exist because they use the multibyte version of slang.
