Er, no, it's useful as hell.  PGI takes advantage of this feature:

1) "live" filesystem mounted from /dev/scd0 during installation for
installer executable and other fat stuff too large to fit on a 2.88MB
floppy initrd image

2) Debian packages retrieved from /dev/scd0 while chrooted into target
system and running apt-get
