Crazy as it sounds, I've found CVS works fairly well. I've found the best
method is to make numerous separate repositories (correct word?) and then a
simple shell script containing the CVS commands to keep all the
repositories in sync. Obviously that script itself can also reside in
CVS...

The trick is to CVS checkout, on both the laptops AND the desktops.

CVS also provides the "ultimate" level of "undelete" and "backup", in that
you can always roll back if you're connected to the CVS server. And if the
CVS server blows up, you lose all your records of past versions, but at
least any of the "child" nodes can be used to recreate the CVS server very
easily.

CVS doesn't much care for binaries like picture files, but any text-like
file is OK.

This also scales fairly well to a "large" number of hosts, if you had say
three boxes on the desk and two laptops to keep synced up...
