First of all i do not think sync'ing your whole home directory is a good
idea, personally... But you might want to have a look at "coda" and
these other caching network file systems.
As far as i've read the coda docs it allows you to work at home with the
notebook and the desktop in sync; when you disconnect the network you
can still work on the notebook (it has a big local cache for the network
volume) and when you reconnect it resync's with the desktop
automatically... At least if you didn't work on the desktop in the
meantime you should be fine ;)

That's the theory at least... i have doubt that this always works and
doesn't lead to some file corruption or data loss...
I prefer sync'ing manually with rsync on a per-directory basis.
