On my potato with 2.4.18 if I do:

bash ~$ yes|grep -v y
						<- ^z
[1]+  Stopped                 yes | grep -v y
rasta@lazarus ~$ bg
[1]+ yes | grep -v y &
rasta@lazarus ~$ fg
yes | grep -v y
						<- ^c
bash ~$ 

Here all is working as it should :)
