If files are installed that don't come in a package, there is no way to know (from a package management POV) where things are. It would really be nice if the standard build system (make) fed changes into your package management system. Maybe Slackware has it right and just needs better tools to handle conflicts...but I don't really think so. How many times has it been said that the power of debian is in the quality of it's packaging? Debian maintainers do more then just wrap upstream software into .deb's. They make sure it works, track bugs, etc. That's why I _use_ debian. <rant> If I wanted a tight system, I'd use Linux From Scratch, or Sorcerer Linux. Building more optimized binaries may only get you 5-10%, but I wonder if it adds up. </rant> Then again, neither of those distro's have such a decent group of Maintainers.
