You can override recommends by hitting Q so they are not treated
the same.

It's only been fixed in CVS (with a patch from Joey Hess) for a few
months now.

Indeed. There are a whole bunch of improvements in CVS that should be
released but we can't do that since the base system is frozen. Such
is life.

I've always said that people shouldn't use apt-get for complex upgrades
for exactly that reason.
