php4 has already a new maintainer team i think, so it probably is no
longer orphaned (the new maintainer is in the New Maintainer Process,
too, i think) - php4 isn't too easy to maintain, i fear: you'll have to
look at lot's of bugs with incomplete/bad/invalid reports, because php4
is a -very- popular package.
That's why the Bug report is retitled to "ITA". (Intend-to-adopt)

I would recommend starting with some small software ;)

You might want to look for orphaned / RFA'ed packages that have a lot of
bugs, fix some of them and then search for a sponsor.
Preferably take some software you actually use (for testing it).
The decision is up to you ;)

You could have a look at "sslwrap" - it's orphaned and will be removed
from woody if the bugs won't be fixed soon.

Greetings,
Erich
