Bug#127750: ITP: speedtouch -- userspace driver for Alcatel Speedtouch USB ADSL Adapter

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

  Package name : speedtouch
  Version : 1.0

Description : userspace driver for Alcatel Speedtouch USB ADSL Adapter

Will have to go into contrib because it needs non-free firmware for the
device, which can be obtained from the windows driver (alcaudsl.sys) or
the manufacturer's own linux driver (mgmt.o). This driver is reverse
engineered, and is said to be more stable than the manufacturer's own,
if slightly slower. Initially I will package the binaries, but the
package needs some scripting (maybe debconf) to find where the firmware
is, confirm the kernel has the required options, and to help the user
set up the ppp settings for the ADSL adapter. An init script will be
required to confirm /proc/bus/usb is mounted, and to start the modem
firmware and monitoring. Then maybe I can do my own version of the
netinst ISOs that has support for getting on-line with this, so people
can do net installs with their broadband in UK and France... =)
