I isolated the problem after starting the mail and forgot to change
the subject.

I cc'd debian-devel so that, if you should have been on holiday, someone
else who might know the answer might see it and reply.  (For myself, if I
get busy, list mail piles up and I merely scan the headers.  I may easily
miss things that way, and it is better for people who want my personal
attention to cc me.  I have my mail system set up to throw away
duplicate mails.  I realise that this is an old controversy, on which
you clearly take the opposite line to me; I shall try to remember your
preferences in future.) 

All that aside, do you know why the memory requirement of
1280 x 1024 x 24 has increased at 4.1.0?  Or is there some new
configuration option?

Here's a possible clue: there appears to be a depth requirement of
32 for framebuffer.  Is that something new?  I have never tried to
use framebuffer; is it now included by default?  Does it use
video memory?  I have changed down to depth 16 and the framebuffer depth
is now also 16.
