X timings upset by last upgrade

I've just upgraded the X packages to 4.1.0 and am no longer able to run
1280x1024 with depth 24; the startup messages say there is insufficient
memory for this.

I'm using xserver-xfree86 with a Matrox Millenium card, with 4Mb memory.

Why has this memory suddenly become insufficient?
