it's pretty easy to set up mhonarc and htdig for a searchable mailing
list archive.

if you can get a copy of mbox archives for previous years, you could run
the archive on your own system.


perhaps the debian list archives should be downloadable as .gz (or .bz2)
files, e.g. as listname-YYYY-MM.gz so that anyone could make their own
searchable index on their own system, and customise the mhonarc options
to suit their preferences.

if there was a canonical download URL for each list, it wouldn't be
too hard to create a package which fetched the archives for particular
lists, years, months and created a local searchable index.

i.e. download the index of archives, present a pick-list for the user
to choose from, download the selected archives, and run them through
mhonarc and htdig.
