Possibly 1, and certainly 2, are the job of the server, not the
client. The client shouldn't have to know the details of what printer is
installed, and what it's capabilities are. For example, my home setup
is that the computer the printer is connected to handles all the format
conversions. My personal workstation just sends the raw stream (might
be postscript, might be dvi, might be PCL, might be ascii.) For me it
doesn't make much difference, that's just the way it evolved. For a
"real" print server, with lots of clients (possibly running a variety
of OS's), expecting the clients to do all the conversion will drive the
sysadmin insane.
