There's an upcoming debian release in the makings. If you want to help
straight away (maybe in parallel to becoming a debian developper) you can
go and help the bootfloppy-team (http://lists.debian.org), since they were
looking for help recently and the installation set is a crucial part in
every release. You can also check the open bugs against base packages
(http://bugs.debian.org) and help to resolve important or critical bugs
against them.

Unfortunately both links I have given you are down at the moment due to a
problem with one of Debian's main servers, so please be patient.
