Yes, I agree this is a good idea. Makes it easier to send a patch
upstream too, if it can be applied without affecting previous patches.

Interesting solution. Not sure I like it or not <grin>.
Fortunately, I have not yet encountered this problem yet. I suspect
you will find it is not a common situation.
