This is more a response to Eric.
On my local system, I have a mostly functioning dpkg --command-pipe. This
allows apt to start dpkg once, then feed it a series of --install, --unpack,
--configure, --purge, --remove commands, and have dpkg run them in
sequence. The natural extension to that is --status-pipe, which I have
thought about previously, and will be doing coding on tonight. See
debian-dpkg@lists.debian.org(or the archives there of) for an actual simulated
apt run using --command-pipe.
