Bug#109611: X11-apps only display squares instead of characters

(btw, this should probably be reassigned somewhere, probably to an
xfree86 package, since the problem manifests itself when upgrading X)

Just another datapoint: it was my observation that this problem went away
after restarting X. My guess is that the upgrade from 4.0.0 -> 4.1.0
introduced some sort of nasty incompatibility with fonts/font servers.
Note that things like KDE and Opera are most likely rendering their own
fonts to work around limitations in the X font model..

Does this happen when upgrading from stable? (personally, I wouldn't
do an upgrade like that in an X session if I could avoid it, but I'm
sure some people will try it)
