There's the same problem with packages maintained by official debian
developpers. There's nothing related with the sponsoring. The usual way
is that when someone thinks a maintainer disappeared, he tries to contact
him and if he doesn't get any answer after a certain time frame he asks
on debian-devel about it (tbm has a system for tracking those MIA
developer, he has a database on qa.debian.org).
