Changing directory to symlink

The last release of my interchange Debian package has a directory:
/usr/lib/interchange/etc

Which is supposed to be empty.

The current package has a symlink:
/usr/lib/interchange/etc => /etc/interchange

But the installation keeps the directory in place.

What is the recommended solution for this problem ?
Removing the directory in the preinst script ?

Racke happily hacks Interchange and maintains Debian packages like Courier.
