That's really strange.  Hasn't happened again, though.

I removed the ALL: PARANOID setting from hosts.deny and that made no
difference.  So I don't think that's it.

Turns out that I can't use ssh-agent properly to get out of the
machine either.  This sounds like it might be an ssh problem.
