Actually, some do. I certainly try, and everytime I managed to convince
myself it was not necessary to do it, I lost the gamble.

If the damage is bad enough, a lot of his Debian maintainer peers will start
to look down at him/her as a moron. That's bad enough for most people.

And yes, that happens and has happened, and you can notice the fallout
easily if you know what to look for.
