Related to this--it would be nice to extend the locking to mouse devices. I know that X and gpm are supposed to play nice (though after many problems with this, I now use the gpm repeater), but that doesn't help when something like mdetect decides to probe devices. Can't whatever mechanism X and gpm use to cooperate be changed to explicit acquire and release the lock, so that other programs can know when use of the device is safe? Andrew
