I am not sure that would be allowed by the license. By my reading of
it the fonts can *only* be distributed as part of the VM (or derivative
work). To split it and put the fonts in non-free may break clause 2.
Certainly the package would still have to depend on the fonts, so would
still not go into main, but contrib.
My gut feeling (but IANAL) is that splitting the fonts off to a
separate package would break at least the spirit of clause 2 and
probably the letter of it. I am not really comfortable with doing
that. Part of being a responsible developer is IMO doing my absolute
best to make sure that I am complying with the licenses that software I
package is issued under. if somebody who knows more about the
licensing issues here than I (the license is available at:
http://people.debian.org/~bagpuss/copyright
for anyone who wishes to check it) wants to explain to me how and why
splitting the fonts in this manner would be permissable under this
license then I would be happy to rethink it.
