unstable is unstable. Answer for your problem is in debian bugs archive.
Maybe sid will be usable with only 2.4 kernels.
With testing/woody I hadn't any problem (but I use 2.4.4 now):
.../dists/woody/main/binary-i386/otherosfs/cdrecord_1.9-1.deb
