Wasn't that only a problem with isa network cards? PCI is common enough now
(at least on i386) that we could still make a lot of people happy with this
scheme.

I know that there are a few conflicts, for instance RTL-8139 can't coexist
with RTL-8129 or some such. That's where the other images would come in.
