I'm working on something similar as part of my last year as student.
The basic idea is to re-use Debian packages to create the root fs of
clients. The next idea is to create administration tools to manage
a network of diskless stations (the project is aimed towards schools
and they don't have skilled unix admins).
If anyone is interested in this there should be a file release soon on
plume.sourceforge.net (for the client part) (it won't have documentation).
