ftp.nl.debian.org

I eas just wondering about ftp.nl.debian.org. Right now, it is
hosted by UUNET NL, at ftp.nl.uu.net aka walrus.nl.uu.net.

Ofcourse that is nice of the UUNET NL folks, and we should be
thankful for it.

However UUNET has an awful peering policy. They do _not_ peer
with most providers in the Netherlands. Not even with really big
ones like Carrier1 or Level3, let alone Cistron Internet.

That means that for a lot of people in .NL, ftp.nl.debian.org
is routed over France, Germany or even the USA.

On the other hand, ftp.uk.debian.org is hosted by xara.net,
they have a presence at the Dutch Amsterdam Internet Exchange,
and they peer with anyone who wants to.

Which leads to the weird situation that from .NL, for most people,
ftp.nl.debian.org is a few countries away, and ftp.uk.debian.org
is pretty much local.

I wonder if this situation has come up before, and if there's
anything that can be done about it.

Mike.
