Re: [platform] My little self-pumping/ego-trip/self-righteous speech :)

* "Daniel Stone"

(are those discussions supposed to take place on -devel or -vote or
both? )

| What I want to know is, essentially:
| What does "less permissions" mean exactly?

Probably that they only have access to their own packages. Anyone who
has passed NM is able to upload a trojan glibc, for instance. I'd
appreciate if I weren't able to do that - it's like having a key to a
room where something goes wrong. I'd rather not have that key.

| Considering I'm waiting on DAM (well, hopefully, all mail for me is
| starting to bounce now), this affects me.

Send an email to whoever is responsible for the NM database (I'm
offline now) and update it.

| I'd also like to point out that the NM queue is ALREADY a pain in the
| arse.

Well, things takes time, yes.

| Have you been through it?

yes.

| Obviously not. Try going through it as an unknown, not one of your
| precious little "senior developers" or people you fast-tracked
| through, just your average Joe Blow.

I guess that describes me. I subscribed debian-devel about the time I
applied. I hadn't had much contact with Debian before then.

| First, you wait for an AM.

Which took about a month or so, yes.

| Then, they say: "Got a GnuPG key?" "Yes."

Well, it wasn't that easy. I was lost for one more month before
sighing on -mentors saying that I had an AM assigned, but he hadn't
contacted me. Bug in some scripts. Anyhow, errare humanum est.

| "Get it signed by a DD."

I knew one, so quite easy.

| "<insert 3 pages of DFSG & DSC questions here>"

Took a little work to find out all the nitty-gritty details. Not
much.

| "Make 2 or 3 lintian-clean packages and chuck 'em on an apt
| archive."

Quite easy, considering that I had already made postgres7 potato .debs
aptable.

| Then they'll hand you over to the DAM. Excluding the time that my
| machine's been down (up soon, hopefully), I spent 32 days waiting
| for DAM approval, not once did I recieve a single email, not even a
| response to "Please resend anything if you have sent it to me, as I
| have not recieved anything, thankyou." Suckage.

Well, it took about the same for me. Said AM had done something wrong
about the signature, which meant that it took another two weeks.
Again - errare humanum est.

Anyhow, you are pointing at weak link - we do probably need another
DAM. SPOF and all that kind of stuff, speed issues.
