X 4.0.1-10 problem

Hello,
After apt-get dist-upgrading to X 4.0.1-10 today
when I try to startx as a normal user I get the error

X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.

And it will not work.  I can run startx as root and it works fine.
Any help would be appreciated, please cc: me as I am not on the list.
