It's just overgrown, and most software is installed ad hoc. You need to
set up a lot of environment variables to get things running.

I haven't been able to find such a remark about environment variables
in this thread, but I assume that it is not an option because all packages
would have to be modified, etc.
Perhaps there's a clean way to use environment variables, what do you think?
