Perhaps it was a problem with the out-of-date libgtkhtml I was using
(which was the latest version I could find on my mirror). I suspect
the shared library may have been linked without declaring all of its
dependencies, probably due to a bug in the configure script.
Anyway, I have no problems with the Debian libgtkhtml package. Thanks
to all concerned.
