zlib1 vs zlib1g

Can someone help me? I think this is a small issue probably...

Debian Woody system.

I'm compiling balsa-0.8 for it using a handy diff listed off freshmeat. the
problem is dh_shlibdeps is returning the zlib version as zlib1 (>= 1:1.1.3) instead
of zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.3).  This means the final binary package won't install.

fortunately, if i install the old libc5 package zlib1 it fixes the problem, but
i'd like to get it to work without having old libs lying around.

Any ideas?
I'm not subscribed to debian-devel (too much traffic) so please CC me.
