Same on my system :) I guess I was wrong. It isn't dependency, but I was using dselect,
and when I removed esound-alsa, all gnome would go away with it. I could have
just used plain esound package of course. I was unable to take note after going
mad at sources of all the different alsa versions on my system. I finally decided
to install my own 0.5.7 modules package, and the lib and util packages and then
to override the old libs from /usr/local

I must have known. ;) Some people have a penchant for old software.
