Works pretty well for me:

[~]$ ping ultra2
PING ultra2.almamedia.fi (194.215.205.22): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 194.215.205.22: icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=14.5 ms
64 bytes from 194.215.205.22: icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=8.8 ms

--- ultra2.almamedia.fi ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 8.8/11.6/14.5 ms

I updated my Potato three hours ago or so from a Finnish mirror. But
yes, I saw that some time ago, too. But it was gone after the next
apt-get upgrade.

ping must be SUID root:

[~]$ ls -l `which ping`
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 14864 Feb 20 10:34 /bin/ping
