I doubt the concerns of the .1% of Web users who actually use a
command shell for browsing were foremost on their minds ;-) IP
addresses are rarely used by most people, and that's when they're 32
bits in length... we don't have the brain storage for manually
entering 128 bit IP addresses, even with the shortcuts (:: for a null
block, hex notation, etc.).
If it's any consolation, regexp metacharacters (think grep) were a
poor choice too, and they're only ~30 years old...
