Whats complicated about using uncompress.sh instead of gzip and
fallback to gzip if not present?

The gain would be bzip2 compression, which is needed to reduce the
size of debian and also any other compressor that might become
commonly used or be extremly good at some sort of data.

Don´t tell me that saving 3-4 GB of mirror space is unnecessary.
