That was done early in unstable, and may be backed out when we
get to freeze.  That's very different from introducing such a
mechanism late in unstable.

Also note that debian policy already includes 10 examples of 
echo -n as recommended procedure.

Speaking of which, this discussion has been moved to the debian-policy
