Until Linux came along, all GPL'd software ran on non-free
OS's. In fact, the roots of most long standing GPL'd or otherwise
DFSG free software (gcc, emacs, bison, flex, sed, Perl, etc) were in
on fee systems -- all these mentioned were designed, and built, and
tested on non-free OS's.
I still think they were free.
