look at ieee 1284. it's pretty old, and should be implemented in every printer
sold in the last 5 years or so. it allows to ask the printer "who are you".
(guess how windows does it's autodetection ?).

i only read something about this, never tried myself...

yep. but direct detection would be a nice plus.
maybe the corel people have some idea what / how to do that ?
