While I'm not a maintainer, I think that what you are doing is wonderful! Some of those bugs have been open for a long time, and a NMU is perfectly appropriate, IMHO. Have you contacted the maintainer and followed all proper NMU procedure? (waiting the appropriate times, etc, as described in the Developers Reference). If so, go ahead!
