dpkg fails in process_queue (bug #41611)

Anyone else has it? How can I go back to a working dpkg?
Package: dpkg
Severity: grave

This morning, after a potato's apt-get dist-upgrade:

ishtar:~/tmp> sudo  dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: ../../../main/packages.c:191: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4'

How do I get out from here? apt-get triggers the same problem:

ishtar:~> sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
