Oh, I imagine it's just "aesthetically displeasing" when the Alpha
folks get
Depends: libc6, libc6.1 (>= 2.1), libgc4
which cannot be satisfied by the set of Alpha packages.
(I'm assuming this was generated by a hardcoded libc6 dependency.
Not looked at the source, though.)
