    Why make it VI centric at all?  For the first instance just have it read
the name of the script being run (ie, symlinks, joe/vi/vim/nvi/emacs, etc)
and say it in the first line.  Then in the 2nd line, just have it say "you'll
be able to choose from several editors."  Up until 2 weeks ago I didn't use
*ANY* vi and find this whole vi/emacs-centric bullshit just that, bullshit. 
There is more to unix editors than those two, deal with it, move on.
