I believe this is what they are doing anyway, not only because they
would want to cross check, but because some of the data they send out
may very well never come back.  There will be some people who sign up
and will give up in the middle and lose interest.

I have been following this thread, and have decided that, at least in
this case, not having the source is not a problem for me.  I would like
to see the source for the front and back ends to their client, but the
data analysing part could remain an object library as far as I care. 
Still, since the project does interest me I have decided to be a part
of it.  So I have gotten  UPSD working (so I can trust leaving the
machine up unattended) and will now try and figure out how to configure
diald. (I'm 69% through the first hunk as of this am).
