openpty: No such file or directory

I just did a update (potato) and got a bunch of new stuff including what looked
like (didn't pay attention...bad me) the new glibc?  Anyways..after finishing
the update and install ssh failed to work...ssh spewed out this error:

error: openpty: No such file or directory

what broke???  or did something get de-installed making way for a new
package I installed???
