i have to disagree with this statement (pedantic of me, i know). one of
the best things about unix is that there is a wealth of existing tools
which can be used to solve a variety of problems.

it is generally better to use an existing general-purpose tool (and
write a sh/perl/whatever wrapper to make it do what you need, if
necessary) to solve your specific problem than it is to write your own
purpose-specific tool.

reinventing the wheel is a waste of time - unless, by some chance,
you actually NEED a square wheel and a round one absolutely won't do
(even then you're probably still better off hacking some corners on to
"squarify" your round wheel (this analogy has gotten silly)).

IMO "apps" suck, tools rule. :-)
